The history of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority
dates from November 12, 1922, when the first Sigma Gamma Rho chapter was organized at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young schoolteachers.
Responsibility, stability, purpose and self respect set the level of scholastic expectancy for the chapters and members collective striving for these qualities of character was necessary for consistently good scholarship. A high standard in scholarship was, and is, directly related to our precepts of quality, of character.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. is a nonprofit, collegiate organization with focus on community service. Its purpose is expressed in its slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress.”
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., gives leadership, service, and resources toward removing barriers and inequalities so that all peoples of America, especially of our Black Community, may develop their potential and exercise full citizenship. Through support of human rights legislation, service to and support of grass roots individual and community development activity and through active participation in the programs of affiliate and other organization, we are committed to working to improve the quality of our lives and the society we serve.
Delta Rho Sigma was founded on November 8, 1975 and reactivated September 2010 by five (5) fabulous women: Leslie M. Clark, Staci King, Griena Knight-Davis, Amy Robinson and Jarkeshia Rogers.
